To qualify for Canadian citizenship, the following criteria must be met:

  • Permanent Resident Status: Irrespective of age, citizenship applicants must hold valid permanent resident (PR) status in Canada. Verify your PR documents to ensure eligibility before applying for citizenship.

  • Residency Requirement: Applicants (including certain minors) need to have spent at least 1,095 days (3 years) physically present in Canada within the 5 years preceding the application date.

  • Tax Compliance: For 3 of the last 5 years before applying, you should have filed Canadian taxes, if required under the Canadian Income Tax Act.

  • Citizenship Test: Individuals aged 18 to 54 at application must pass a citizenship test, covering Canada’s history, values, institutions, and symbols, as well as the rights and duties of citizenship.

  • Language Proficiency: Demonstrating adequate English or French language skills (speaking and listening) is mandatory for applicants aged 18 to 54. This requirement helps ensure successful integration into Canadian society.

Additional considerations include:

​

  • No Recent Criminal History: Applicants must not be under a removal order or facing criminal charges in Canada or abroad, and should not have recent convictions that may impact eligibility.

  • Intent to Reside: While you don't need to remain in Canada after receiving citizenship, at the time of your application, you should have the intention to live in Canada.

​
